Nestling diet and parental food provisioning in a declining mountain passerine reveal high sensitivity to climate change

چکیده

Mountain ecosystems naturally experience strong seasonal weather variations leading to a brief peak in food availability that constrains bird reproduction. Climate change accentuates both the intra- and interannual variability, which turn can reduce predictability of resources hence impact population demography. Yet, relatively little is known about influence environmental factors on breeding ecology mountain birds. Here, we quantified nestling diet provisioning behaviour Alpine ring ouzel Turdus torquatus alpestris, an emblematic declining thrush species typical central European treeline ecotones, relate these parameters local conditions. Nests were monitored with camcorders assess prey frequency identify items delivered by parents nestlings, as well estimate biomass. Our results indicate prominence earthworms (Lumbricidae) diet, terms abundance (80%) biomass (90%). Elevated ambient temperatures negatively impacted rates chicks parents, while rainfall had positive effect The mean item decreased throughout season, did proportion nestlings' diet. These findings highlight key role played parental behaviour, probably reflecting low staple source, earthworms, warm dry contexts. In particular, they underpin how climate alterations, notably increasing changing precipitation regimes, could Although effects reproductive performance dynamics still ought be studied, further our understanding ecological mechanisms potentially at play decline wildlife inhabiting high-elevation, climate-sensitive ecosystems.

Declining water yield from forested mountain watersheds in response to climate change and forest mesophication.

Climate change and forest disturbances are threatening the ability of forested mountain watersheds to provide the clean, reliable, and abundant fresh water necessary to support aquatic ecosystems and a growing human population. Here, we used 76 years of water yield, climate, and field plot vegetation measurements in six unmanaged, reference watersheds in the southern Appalachian Mountains of No...

The mountain environment, a driver for adaptation to climate change

The mountain environment is perceived today by vine-growers as a strong structural constraint. Yet in the current context of climate change, in which we turn to genetics, irrigation or innovation in cultural practices to maintain production quality, could the mountain environment emerge as a solution for adapting to climate change in vine-growing? Here we explore the role of cooperative policie...

Competition with a host nestling for parental provisioning imposes recoverable costs on parasitic cuckoo chick's growth.

Chicks of the brood parasitic common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) typically monopolize host parental care by evicting all eggs and nestmates from the nest. To assess the benefits of parasitic eviction behaviour throughout the full nestling period, we generated mixed broods of one cuckoo and one great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) to study how hosts divide care between own and parasitic y...

Evidence for declining forest resilience to wildfires under climate change.

Forest resilience to climate change is a global concern given the potential effects of increased disturbance activity, warming temperatures and increased moisture stress on plants. We used a multi-regional dataset of 1485 sites across 52 wildfires from the US Rocky Mountains to ask if and how changing climate over the last several decades impacted post-fire tree regeneration, a key indicator of...
